I became involved so quickly because in only one semester at Marist, the Music Department gave me something that I believe every college freshman looks to find: a home. I was welcomed into the program with open arms and was considered part of the family from the start. I came into Marist knowing how to play my instruments, but the music program taught me how to create with them, perform with them, and use my skills in ways that I never imagined I could.
At Marist, I’ve learned to sing, not just perform. I’ve learned discipline and patience, I’ve learned all that my voice can do and how versatile I can be, and I’ve been exposed to so many types of music, from choral to opera to Broadway standards. Most of all, I’ve learned who I am as a musician.
Music Camp at Marist was where I had first met many of my college friends, and where I first found a sense of belonging, and family. It was at that moment, that I knew I would love it here at Marist. No one judged anyone else’s ability to play, and we were all seen as the same; a member of the Marist Orchestra. Although I am not particularly musically inclined, I still really enjoy playing the violin, and I was able to continue improving throughout the years I have been here at Marist.
I’m a member of Time-Check, the all-male a cappella group, Marist College Singers, and Chamber Choir. These groups have not only provided me with a space to pursue my love of choral music, but they’ve also helped me grow tremendously as a leader.
[Choral Director] Sarah Williams taught me to ask myself, ‘Where can I best contribute?’ She modeled compassion and basic humanity, and she continues to influence me today.
I always felt a bit detached from what I was singing, and now, I sound totally different as a singer. [Choral Director] Sarah Williams is an inspiration, and I’ll always have a special connection with her. She’s like a second mom to me.

Travel the World with Marist Music

The Marist Singers, led by Williams, gave a series of public concerts at prestigious venues in Vienna, Eisenstadt, Mondsee, and Hallstatt before heading to Mozart’s hometown of Salzburg to participate in World Choral Fest (WCF), whose aim is “bringing the world together in song.” The festival culminated in a dramatic performance of both classic and new choral works inside the elegant Salzburg Cathedral, where the public treated them to a standing ovation.
