Experiential Learning in the Classroom

From day one as a Marist Education student, you will engage in hands-on learning experiences, both in the classroom and in the field. With practicum experiences tied to nearly every course, students are often in the field, observing, teaching, and learning. For example, in the course "Principles of Instruction for Students with Disabilities" students learn basic coding skills to manipulate the movements of a smart robot, and more importantly, how something complex like this can be taught to students with disabilities.

Hands-on Experience in the Field of Education

Not only do our education students engage in hands-on experiences in the classroom, but they also receive opportunities in the field as undergraduates. Participate in altruistic organizations like Best Buddies, Teachers of Tomorrow, and even the Special Olympics to gain the cultural, community experience that we believe goes hand-in-hand with classroom Field Experience requirements. Take a culturally-responsive pedagogical trip to Hawaii, engage in a papermaking and bookbinding workshop, even study abroad to learn about teaching international students – the experiential learning you gain as a Marist Education student is designed to provide you with the skills to excel as an educator.

Marist equipped me with the leadership skills I needed through practical experience. The experiences I gained...helped me develop skills I have used throughout my entire professional life, including the importance of standing up for the most vulnerable in our community.
I chose to pursue my degree at Marist for two reasons. First, Marist offers the opportunity to become dual certified in both elementary and special education. Second, Marist offers the 5-year program where I could obtain my Master's in Educational Psychology in only one extra year after my undergraduate degree. It was an ideal scenario for me and my career.
I am deeply committed to service and working with children. With my Marist experience, there are many paths I can take now and many doors that will open.
It was really appealing to be able to finish the Educational Psychology program after five years of college, rather than six or more years. It has been amazing having my cohort become my family and having that extra time to enjoy everything that makes this school so great: the river, the sunsets, and seeing familiar faces on campus daily.
This program has helped me to understand the whole child and apply this knowledge to my classroom daily. Each course I take at Marist has been directly applicable to what I am doing every day in the classroom, whether it be understanding assessment in a new way or viewing adolescents with a new light.
At Marist, I had the chance to go on a two-week extension program to Hawaii, which was offered through the Psychology/Special Education programs. This was by far one of the most amazing experiences I have had at Marist. During this program, I observed a number of classrooms and reflected on the various cultures found in the schools we visited.
