Path Toward Certification

On September 26-28, Marist College will host an accreditation visit by the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP). In preparation for the visit, the AAQEP Quality Review Team is soliciting public comment about the quality of educator preparation provided by Marist College. All comments must be submitted by August 29, 2023 through the AAQEP website: Submit Comment

Our Education faculty are at the top of their field and have a diverse range of specialties. Our faculty is intentionally composed of professionals with a wide array of experiences, expertise, and training backgrounds, exposing our students to a variety of sub-disciplines both within and outside the Education degree. Susan Chambre

Dr. Chambre has taught for over a decade in urban and suburban elementary schools as a special education teacher, teacher-trainer, and literacy coach. Her research focuses on the effects of print exposure, specifically decoding, on early readers’ vocabulary learning.

Carol Rinke

Along with being the Assistant Dean for the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Dr. Rinke also coordinates the Marist Center for Social Justice Research (MCSJR), which constructs collaborative teams of faculty, students, and community members to conduct research in support of the social good.

Christina Wright Fields

Dr. Wright Fields’ research focuses on historically marginalized students’ experiences both in K-12 and postsecondary education, issues pertinent to student access and academic success, and the influence of teacher and student cultural identities within the classroom.

Choose the Track That Works for You

Our teaching candidates have the opportunity to both diversify and specialize their learning experiences in a variety of ways. Pursue a path that is flexible yet specific to your interests and strengths by choosing between the Adolescence/Special Education or Childhood Education/Special Education tracks:

The Adolescence/Special Education track prepares our students for teaching grades 7-12. All students complete a five-year dual degree program which leads to a bachelor’s, master’s, and certification in your content area as well as Students with Disabilities.
The Childhood/Special Education track leads to dual certification in Childhood Education and Students with Disabilities for grades 1-6. This program is "Nationally Recognized" by the Association of Childhood International (ACEI) and the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC).
The Birth through Grade 2 (B-2) certificate is an elective program which prepares candidates for certification in pre-school and kindergarten and may be added to our Childhood/Special Ed program.

With practicum experiences tied to nearly every course, students are often in the field, observing, teaching, and learning. For example, in the course "Principles of Instruction for Students with Disabilities" students learn basic coding skills to manipulate the movements of a smart robot, and more importantly, how something complex like this can be taught to students with disabilities.

Hands-on Experience in the Field of Education

Not only do our education students engage in hands-on experiences in the classroom, but they also receive opportunities in the field as undergraduates. Participate in altruistic organizations like Best Buddies, Teachers of Tomorrow, and even the Special Olympics to gain the cultural, community experience that we believe goes hand-in-hand with classroom Field Experience requirements. Take a culturally-responsive pedagogical trip to Hawaii, engage in a papermaking and bookbinding workshop, even study abroad to learn about teaching international students – the experiential learning you gain as a Marist Education student is designed to provide you with the skills to excel as an educator.

While many of our teacher education candidates have some similar interests when it comes to the future of their careers, this does not mean that our Education program or the path to your success is one-size-fits-all. Just like the diversity of our programming options, career success with an Education degree from Marist can take many forms.
